Personal History:
Annis Black is ancient. She comes from the old times, when only the Celts inhabited Great Britain. Unfortunately, she's been alive for so long that she does not remember many of the details of her personal history. She was a Spirit with form who helped the Celts during darkness and invasions, always bringing hope and health to those who placed their faith in her. Long after the death of the one known as the Christ, Annis sacrificed herself to the followers of this new god so they would allow her people to remember the ancient Celtic ways in some form and to retain some amount of cultural pride and heritage, the memory of the old traditions. Because she did this, the old ways were not destroyed, merely dismissed or absorbed by the followers of the new god.
Annis was happy, but her penance would be great. The followers of the new god made her corporeal. She could never again take on, benefit from, or assist others through her spirit form. This physically tied her to the earth forever.
They took her beauty from her as well. The very human beings she so willingly sacrificed herself for would only ever be able to see her as an aged crone, hideously old and ugly. The humans who followed the new god would eventually call her hag and weave frightening tales of how she, the Black Annis, would lead innocent children to their deaths and devour their flesh.
But the followers of the new god forgot something. Not all humans are simple and closed-minded. Some humans bear an infinite potential to see and experience things as they truly are. These same humans are the ones who, for generations, have been able to harness and use this potential. Those humans are wizards and witches and they look at Annis Black and see a simple and quirky country girl who loves animals (both magical and non) and lives alone down at the end of the road with her four horses, two cows, three five goats (a nanny just had twins), two crups, six dogs, eight kneazles, three cats, three ravens, twelve chickens, one pig, five rabbits, one turtle, countless frogs, and two rats.
Oh, and a freed house elf named Owsley, who refuses to leave because he likes Annis’ cooking and her ability to tie-dye his pillow-case shirts perfectly.
Over the centuries Annis has traveled to and studied in many places around the world. (Some examples would be Tibet, India, San Francisco, Athens, Egypt, Rome, Jerusalem, Babylon, Hooterville, China, and France, to name a few.) Some of the people in those places saw her as an old woman, some saw her as a youthful girl. She has a great deal of time on her hands and has learned and forgotten more than most humans will ever be able to remember. The older she grows, the more she slowly forgets. She has observed, lived, and/or formally studied thousands of years worth of experience and knowledge and there is only so much information a human-type brain can hold because the space inside a skull is finite (thus her forgetting).
But there is one piece of information she is unlikely to forget. The followers of the new god not only cursed her by physically incarcerating her in a human body and turning the people she loved from her, they made sure she would never find a true love of her own. The day she falls in love is the day her mortality takes hold, and she will then have to finish out what life is left in the body in which she has been imprisoned. Simply put: she falls in love, she becomes mortal.
But if that does ever happen, will she be allowed to live her life beginning as a beautiful young woman or an old hoary crone?
Losses during the war: Annis did not suffer any personal losses during the second war against Voldemort. She has survived many wars and she thinks that is the particular war she is being asked about. Annis watched from afar, heartbroken, as she has done in every other war that has occurred during her existence. She is no fool, and her experience tells her that something is afoot in Annwn. She has observed the sudden growth and concentration of magic in the town. She knows that the spirits of the dead have returned and live as humans among the living. Her curiosity, but even more so, her wariness and suspicion, have been peaked.
Annis wants to know the secrets of the town of Annwn as she would like to somehow ‘keep an eye’ on whatever it is that is going on. She comprehends and feels the power and magic being used in Annwn and it concerns her because cruelty and tyranny often follow closely behind such concentrations of power. Although she is only a shadow of the being she once was, she still feels the responsibility of being in Annwn in case something terrible happens. She may very well not be able to do anything to stop or help the situation, but her duty is to mankind.
Muggles see Annis as a hag. She sees herself in her youthful form, as do animals and magical creatures. Magical folk see her in her youthful form (unless she reveals otherwise.) During the Burning Times of the late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries, she was very good friends with Honoria Nutcombe, and assisted her friend with the establishment of the Society for the Reformation of Hags. She has never consumed human flesh. After she was trapped in her ‘human’ body and compelled to live as a human, she even attempted to be a vegetarian and was successful for a period of seventy years. The invention of the cheeseburger ended that.
Other than that she has been a complete unknown to and in the history of the magical world.
Academia and Career
Excellent/Good/Mediocre/Poor Student? She is an excellent learner.
Good at Job? She is very good at what she does.
Does this character's performance accurately reflect their intelligence? yes
Most talented in: She works well with animals and magical creatures as well as the healing arts, vegetation and plant life (magical and non), herbs, incense, fertility, meditation, aromatherapy, growth, nature, earth, Hatha Yoga, counseling, prayer, etc.
Struggles with: Annis cannot perform any kind of magic that does not have a direct connection with nature and the earth itself. She owns no wand and therefore cannot cast spells such as charms, object transfiguration, hexes, jinxes, defensive magic, etc. Even if she holds a wand, she cannot use it. To those who don’t know her, she appears to be a squib. In order perform magic she must directly touch a person or object and the magic is not instantaneous, but gradual, like fertilization to a plant or antibiotics to a living creature.
Favourite class during Hogwarts years: She was never a student at Hogwarts.
Favourite instructor: either Osho or St. Francis of Assisi
Other magical oddities/abilities: She cannot perform wand magic. Muggles avoid her and seem to be afraid of her, especially Muggle children.
